Late last night I got outbid on the ‘64 Barracuda I’ve been following, and while it’s still at a price where I’m very much in on it, I began to think maybe I shouldn’t go down that road. But today, Cuda Watch gained a much needed boost:

Parental approval.

Kinja'd!!!

Now I mean I’m 31, I don’t need my parents’ (specifically my dad) say so to do something like this. What I mean is that when I mentioned to my dad that I was thinking of getting out of it, he was disappointed. Apparently he had been saying to my mom that he was thinking about just buying an engine to stick on a stand in his garage and work on, and the 273 in the Barracuda fits the bill perfectly.

So that’s good news for me for a few reasons. First and foremost, my dad wants to kick in a few bucks for the car which expands my budget. Second, my dad gets shit DONE. When he starts a job, that job gets finished and finished well. Third, we actually both have the same vision for the car: keep the outside just as it is, all new bushings and parts in the suspension, mild build on the 273 and a really nice looking engine compartment.

So there we go. There's about 19 hours left in Cuda Watch, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Mustang, sure, Camaro, sure, but I’ve always loved the Barracuda. They could have cross-platformed it as a Dodge, but they didn’t. Just don’t break the rear glass.

I'm gonna get a separate insurance policy just for the back glass. I'm going to constantly be looking for early Cuda parts cars and hoarding rear glass just in case.

And I wonder ... they sold a lot of Mustangs and a lot of Camaros - I wonder what the build count is on this first gen Barracuda.

On a related note - fishing in Florida once, and dove off the boat to cool off. Clear water, and I looked and saw a barracuda just hanging out under the boat. Got my ass back onto the boat in record time.

I found it on ebay, and I have to say NP.

What I mean is that when I mentioned to my dad that I was thinking of getting out of it, he was disappointed.

Also you mean to say your dad wasn’t disappointed?

No, he was disappointed that I wasn’t going to bid further on it. I didn’t word that very well, haha.

It's definitely a NP right now, for me it probably will be right up around $1500. I mean at that price it's still a really solid car with a factory v8 and a stick and will likely appreciate in value.

Ah I see what you mean now. If you can get that for 1500, or maybe even 2k it’s a NP, in the long run 500 isn’t that much money.

Apparently for 1964, despite going on sale 16 days before the Mustang, the Barracuda sold 23,000 units...about 1/5 what the Mustang sold.

I think it took until the late 60s for Plymouth to establish itself as a performance brand. Road Runner and all that.

Agreed. It sold a few months ago for $1650, which seems about right. Before that it sold on eBay for $2900 but the sale fell through, presumably because it really isn’t worth that.

I’m probably going to. I’m just trying to figure out what the most I want to pay is...it goes off around 1pm tomorrow, so I’m gonna start creeping up on the other guy’s bid with like 5 minutes to go, see how serious he is. But I’ll be doing that on my phone, I’ll have my computer set up and ready to go with my top-dollar bid with 4 seconds left, as is my custom.

Somebody posted an ad for a late 60s 440 six pack here yesterday. It was 9 grand, though and all original. Still, there must be less historical similar things around.

Ah, that’s some pretty serious rot. Some of it in a very bad place.

I’m always one to encourage the project, especially when I have no labor obligations / skin in the game. However, please bid carefully.

I saw that. I've never been big on paying a lot of extra money for historic significance...that engine would need to go in a concours perfect vehicle to me.

Yeah, the base of the pillar is the worst of it, besides that it's mostly the wheel wells. The pillar rot will get fixed, the rest might get left alone. Underneath the car is really solid, been off the road and indoors since the mid 70s.

Yeah I’m not sure what it means. It could mean that period engines may have survived, it may also mean they’re unobtanium.
